VAGABUNDO

PORTRAIT OF THE UNKNOWN ONE, 2025

“Portrait of the Unknown One”, Exhibition

(«Портрет невідомо(ї)го», виставка)

Location: Underground Passage “Vagabundo” – an independent contemporary art space in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.

What will remain for future generations from our turbulent times? Ruins or grand constructions, pride or defeat, the beauty or the ugliness of our actions...
No one knows.

Whose image will become iconic enough to be printed on the next banknote? A chaplain, a soldier, a profiteer? The ever-present talking heads have far greater chances than the quiet ones.

Does a time like this need a hero — and does a portrait have to be heroic?

Will today's artists, poets, and photographers leave behind the avant-garde of the present moment?

“The long-forgotten ritual function of the portrait presupposed a connection between worlds — this one and the beyond, the temporary and the eternal.”
— Olha Tarasenko, “Portrait and Ritual,” Art Kursiv, No. 1, 2008

In truth, these reflections are not about anything specific. Not even about history or remembrance, but about what has been lived or imagined. About pain or joy. About forgetting or hope.

Enough about dreams — the portrait has always been, and remains, a popular genre. And so, by observing what has been created, we may glimpse predictions.

Drawing, sculpting, photographing, or filming the world around us leaves a trace. At the very least — for the artist.

My contribution to this exhibition was a selection of three works from my ongoing series Meditations from the Roads. Created during and after long solitary drives across Ukraine in the first years of the full-scale invasion, this series reflects on absence, presence, and the emotional landscapes formed between departures and returns. Each painting is a kind of portrait — not of a real person but of something imagined, remembered or felt. Sometimes it is a character, sometimes an identity, a vision, or a state of mind. A portrait of memory, reflection, longing and the road as a space for meditation.

FACES OF SILENCE

FACES OF SILENCE, 2025

Inner Peace, Artistic Resilience, and the Power of Quiet in Times of Turmoil

Chicago Grand Gallery hosted a group exhibition featuring four Ukrainian contemporary artists whose works explore the transformative potential of inner silence. Opened on February 1, 2025, this exhibition featured half of its artworks delivered directly from Kyiv, Ukraine - a testament to the resilience and dedication of Ukrainian artists during the challenges of war.

Titled Faces of Silence and curated by Tamara Lee, a prominent Ukrainian and international art curator, the exhibition ran through March 1, 2025.

SUGAR-FREE

SUGAR-FREE,
2024

Curated by Ukrainian and international curator Tamara Lee, this group exhibition took place from December 12, 2024, to January 21, 2025 at Mriya Gallery in New York. It brought together contemporary Ukrainian artists and American artists of Ukrainian descent working on both sides of the Atlantic.

I was glad to take part with several works from my Meditations from the Roads series, shown alongside prominent Ukrainian artists such as Petro Lebedynets, Volodymyr Bovkun, Arsen Savadov, and strong voices from the mid-career generation like Hanna Kryvolap, Andriy Sydorenko, Anna Valieva, Phil Lee, Marianna G, and Lina Condes.

RESILIENCE FORMULA,
2024

A group exhibition held at the Modern Art Research Institute of the National Academy of Arts in Kyiv as part of the cultural platform New Directions. The curatorial focus was on resilience as a psychological and social phenomenon in wartime Ukraine — how people recover, adapt, and find new strength. The project brought together over 40 contemporary artists whose works reflect adaptation, endurance, and emotional strength during ongoing war, including some well-known names such as Oleh Tistol, Andrii Tsoi, Masha Shubina, Oksana Chepelyk, Andrii Bludov, and others. I participated with works from my In Search of the Unknown Hero project. Two other locations included M17 Contemporary Art Center and the National Academy of Arts. Curators: artist, curator, and researcher Andriy Sydorenko and art critic and curator Iryna Yatsyk of the Modern Art Research Institute of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. This major group show was on display from October 25, 2024 until March 2025.

In Search of the Unknown Hero ran from September 12, 2024 to the end of November 2024 at the Museum of Ideas in Lviv, one of the first independent cultural institutions and art galleries in post-Soviet Ukraine, founded in 1992 and still managed and curated by Ukrainian artist, architect, curator, and civil activist Oles Dzyndra.
